The Western Road is uncharacteristic of much of Prince Edward Island. The land is flat and the landscape featureless for mile after mile. After the O'Leary corner there is more of interest to attract the eye of the traveller, most of it man-made: Hernewood Junior High School, and its big sister a little further on, Westisle Composite High School — massive modern complexes of brick and glass. In contrast, there is the lacy delicacy of timberwalled St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church at Bloomfield and the occasional verandah-ed, L-shaped Island farmhouse. But the road begins to give promise of arriving somewhere when it veers right to carry the traveller into Alberton, the quintessential Prince Edward Island small town.
